That there is a Staghorn Sumac. It's a gorgeous tree that obviously has brilliant color in that fall.
About 2 years ago I bought one. It was a lot smaller than the one in the picture. It had the trunk which looked like a branch and 2 little branches with leaves on them but I was bound and determined to help it grow. I planted it in a pot because I knew I was going to move and wanted to take it with me. As long as I took extra good care of it, it should be fine in a pot. So Yay! I had myself a tree. The leaves changed colors in the fall, just like they were supposed to, and the tree was bare all winter long.
Spring came and I was worried about my little branch of a tree. See, I didn't put it in the garage throughout winter like the lady at the greenhouse told me to. So I thought that it had died. But then I noticed some new little buds forming on the branches and I knew I had succeeded! A whole new branch grew in and with that came more glorious leaves!
We ended up moving just after the leaves started falling that fall and I put that tree into the moving truck with the rest of my belongings. The tree had a new home on my back porch here in Wyoming.
Oh dear. Wyoming. Where the wind blows worse than Nebraska and the snow comes more frequently. And the deer - let's not forget the deer. They like to munch on everything they can during the long winter months. And the winter months ARE long. Would 9 months of cold be too much for my branch?
Well, "springtime" came. Technically it was spring because the calendar said so. But the weather said otherwise.
Thor had wrapped a string around one of the new branches of my tree and upon close inspection, the tree was budding again! It HAD survived!!! Halleluja!!!
And then Thor pulled on the string and broke the branch.
And then some deer came and stripped the bark at the base of the trunk. (I hope they got sick.)
So I was depleted. I had failed my tree.
Today, because there was nothing growing ON my tree, I thought the worst and was about to send it with the rest of the weeds I had just pulled. As I was talking with Popeye, I was digging it out to toss it away and plucked out what I thought were weeds from the dirt growing in the pot. And then it struck me.
I am so clueless when it comes to horticulture.
Those "weeds" were attached to the ROOT of the tree. That's right folks. My tree's ultimate demise came from me. I pulled her leaves off before they could turn red and fall to the ground.
I feel horrible. I just seriously hope that they grow back. Please, grow back!
Popeye tried to make me feel better by saying, "You know, the deer probably would've eaten those anyway."
Yeah, he's probably right. And so you know what I did?
I lovingly replanted my tree and am going to hope for the best for next year. Who knows, maybe we'll be in an area where there is actually a spring and fall!

It's beautiful! And I like that you take it with you. It reminds me of my mom because she had special roses that she brought from Utah and they made it through several moves and several states. I believe your tree will rally and spring forth.
