Popeye got sunburned on Saturday. We went to see the Blue Angels perform in South Dakota and he forgot to put sunscreen on, thus resulting in a severe sunburn. Not only did his face get rather toasty, but so did the top of his head because he couldn't find his hat before we left and didn't want to buy a new one.
His skin started peeling off today. That really sucks for him because I have an unusual disorder of needing to pick at things and this just gives me one more thing to pick at. Perhaps it's a nice break from my picking at his facial hair, I don't know. But what I do know is this: when his skin gets peeled off or a hair gets tweezed the wrong way, his exclamation is, "It hurts like the dickens!"
Who says that anyway? Who are the dickens? What do they do to make it hurt so bad? I'm sure Charles Dickens is in no way associated with the phrase other than the same name. So I 'bing'ed the phrase origin and found out something new today.
Dickens is another name for Devil. Huh.
I feel smarter now.

interesting. You learn something new every day. I'll have to remember Dickens...
Who knew? You learn something new every day. I have your disorder, too, and you know what? It really is a disorder. My hubs hates it, but at least he has a nice non-ingrown-hair face.:)
I knew that and used to say it for my swear in HS, but it was also because my English teacher made us read Dickens A LOT, and I had not yet developed a love for him.
