Successful FHE's - so NOT overrated!

Last night we had Family Home Evening. Yes, I know, yesterday was Tuesday. We're different like that.
Anyway. We made gingerbread houses (with graham crackers because I wasn't on the ball enough to make the gingerbread ahead of time. Next time...).
The last time I made a gingerbread house was - um... I don't remember. I know I've seen pictures of me making one with my brother and sisters when we were kids... but I don't think I've actually sat down and MADE one since then.
Last Friday I helped out in Optimus Prime's classroom and they made GB houses. I watched and made sure everyone had enough icing & helped free candies from plastic wrappers. But I didn't get to BUILD one! Since then, I've been wanting a creative outlet and ONLY in this form (putting aside teacher presents and tutu's). So we did it!
Everyone had a fun time. Mr. Fantastic had issues at first (when does he NOT?) but once I finished helping Princess Monkey Eyes put her house together, I helped him build his. And then he was happy because he could decorate it without it falling over.
Popeye helped Optimus Prime with his. Thor enjoyed eating the candy and dipping his knife in the frosting. (Yes, I let my two-year old play with knives...) After the kids were all done with theirs, I made my own little shack. Mr. Fantastic took the picture of me with my house and Popeye took the rest!
See? You CAN have successful FHE's! It IS possible!! You just needs loads of candy and unlimited access to it!!!

Cute house, huh? Very colorful and fun to make. I wanted it bigger - but I was given the last of the icing...

Isn't Thor so cute? He even tipped his head next to mine and said, "Cheeeeese".

Mr. Fantastic after getting his "issues" resolved... He made a smiley face on the roof of his with chocolate chips and m&m's.

See those chocolate chips on the "snow"? Optimus Prime says, "It's reindeer poop." Nice.

Princess Monkey Eyes decorated the house herself. She did a FANTABULOUS job! (I helped secure the candies with a little more icing - but she did the design!)

How FUN! Hubby and I have some gingerbread in the fridge waiting to be rolled/cut out for our date-night! :)

Now, I'm gonna have to make gingerbread men for the rest of us to decorate. You know, the kids? lol!

So cute. It looks like you were successful, but I have to share a tip about making gingerbread or graham cracker houses: just use a glue gun to assemble the house. Who eats that stuff anyway (the graham cracker or the gingerbread)? Then you can use frosting for the candy, but no wobbly houses and no crying kids. Or grown ups.

Rachel, I have to tell you - the kids HAVE been eating their houses!!! They have been picking them up and just taking bites out of them because they can't pick them apart!
Silly kids! (But I had fun gluing them together - I'm cool like that.)

I love your "gingerbread" houses, but I can't bear to try it myself. I know Maddalyn would be the only one to eat hers and it seems like too big of a waste. If only I could relax and let it go - we could have a fun, successful FHE like you guys!

Those pictures are awesome! :-)

So glad you all had a good time (for the most part, it sounds like). ;-)

I consider an FHE successful if we hung in there for at least 2 minutes, and no one went crazy.

I'm hoping that standard will be raised in a year or two. ;-)

Congratulations!!
