Pressure cooking 101

Do you own a pressure cooker? Do you even know what one is? Do you have *fond* memories of your mother (or someone else - not YOU, of course) opening the pressure cooker before the pressure inside had subsided and beef stew or ham and beans exploding everywhere?

Tonight I cooked with my pressure cooker. It's not the first time. But close to it.
Popeye said dinner was fine. Ummm. He's a liar. I cooked a ham in it (after cooking the potatoes for potatoes au gratin). And even though I added 3 cups of water, the ham was a bit ... shall we compare it to saddle leather? I tried 'rehydrating' it with the glaze I concocted (which really was VERY yummy) but sadly, it did not come back to life.

It seems a lot of the meat dishes I prepare in my pressure cooker end up this way. Pork roast. Pork ribs. Ham.
HEY!!! Maybe it's the pig!!!!

Well, disregard THIS post, I just won't cook anymore pig products in my pressure cooker and I'll be fine! (Wilbur, you're free!!!)

What a laugh! I'm sorry, but poor Wilbur just couldn't take the pressure any more.:)
I remember my dad making beans and the pot blowing to the ceiling. What a mess! I'm scared of those things, so I don't even own one. (Someday, maybe.)

My only experience with a pressure cooker is that my MIL makes a dish called "Laura's Leftovers" in it. It's a beef roast with a glaze that includes pineapple extract... I don't know what else is in it. :-) My mom doesn't have one, so I'm mostly unfamiliar with them. :-)

Now... I'm curious as to why your meat turns out that way all the time. Hm.

I've never used a pressure-cooker. And thanks, probably never will. It'll be my luck that the thing will explode. Hmph! lol!

Don't get me wrong - I love my pressure cooker. They've advanced TONS since we were kids. Mine has a little button that lets me know when it's been de-pressurized - so no exploding soups in my kitchen.
I'm wondering if I need to COVER the meat with water/liquid... Hmm, I need to research.

Hahaha! Sorry, but I loved the reference to saddle leather. ;-)

We have a pressure cooker, but we really only use it for corn and green beans. I guess I'm not to experienced with it.

Hubby forced me to buy one, because he has fond memories of pressure cookers from his youth....
